AUCTION
Egypt 1872. Folded cover mailed from Alexandria to Genoa, Italy bearing blue green oval cachet of the forwarding agent (G. HAKIM E. FIGLI ALESSANDRIA), and endorsed (Vapore Italiano), with arrival cds of GENOVA 10.FEB.72 on reverse. This cover was originally franked by Austrian Levant 15 soldi yellow brown stamp (Yvert# 5), and supposed to be sent through the Austrian post office, but the sender changed his mind (why ..?) and decided to send it through italian lines, and Italian 40c rose carmine Victor Emmanuel stamp (Yvert# 19, Scott# 31) was affixed over and covering most of the Austrian stamp. Both stamps were tied by the Italian P. O. in Egypt numeral obliterator (Smith type OB-1) with cds of ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO - POSTE ITALIANE 4.FEB.72 Smith type CD-2 alongside. The numeral obliterator used on this cover was not (234) of Alexandria, but was (235) of Tunisia, another mystery yet to be solved. How and why thess changes happened? This cover might be unique with these two uncertainty features, and deserve more in depth study. Rare item for serious collectors of Italy used abroad, Italian and Austrian post offices in Egypt and maritime collectors.
Start Price: $400.00 Bid
